In 1997, the then Executive Committee of ALPA-S decided that ALPA-S should not be seen as just a trade union in the eyes of the public seeking only to benefit the pilot body but should be seen as a responsible organization with public outreach to the less fortunate.
We then set out with the task of scrutinizing over 200 charities and finally settled on the Singapore Children's Society Convalescent Home which was located in Admiralty Road West in a beautiful black and white colonial bungalow with spacious lawns and which housed 2 storeys of a diverse mix of children from broken homes.
ALPA-S’s contribution has been very consistent. Since 1997, ALPA-S members have contributed more than $600,000. We also noticed that not every child has the privilege to a warmed CNY re-union, hence the association added another $80,000 ($5,000/yr) in the last 20 years to celebrate with our Sunbeam Children.
For many years we have garnered the Gold Award for contribution of $50,000 and above to the home. In 2018, we were awarded 3 awards, besides the $50,000 contribution, ALPA-S was awarded a distinguish Gold award for organization contributed for more than 10 years and Captain David Eliathamby for individual Gold Awards for serving more than 10 years.
In recognition of our association’s support over the years, Captain Suresh Menon was elected as the Vice-Chair, together with Capt Yang Siew, Capt. David Eliathamby, they sit on the main standing Committee of the Sunbeam Executive Committee.
